Upper Niger

The Observatory refers to the Upper Niger Basin and the Inner Niger Delta in West Africa. In this Section you find the spatial scope, topography as well as a brief sketch of the West African context.

The Observatory refers to the Upper Niger Basin and the Inner Niger Delta in West Africa. Both subbasins of the Niger River cover various climate zones, from the moist savannas in Guinea to the dry edge of the Sahara in Mali. A large part of this area is situated in the Sahel and adjacent dry savanna, where water resources are scarce and highly variable within and between years. At the same time, the availability of water resources is the key driver of the socio-economic development, the production of natural resources and vital to ecosystems and biodiversity.

In this Section a brief sketch is presented of the Upper Niger Basin and Inner Niger Delta in a West African context with, on a global level, information on topography, climate zones, soil and elevation, land use and population development.
